The Rio Grande has played a major role in carving out the terrain of South Texas. As a result of its the Rio Grande’s influence, a semi-tropical oasis has formed in southern Texas. The state park receives its name, ‘resaca,’ which is a term coined to label the oxbow lakes that are found Brownsville and other areas in Cameron County. Resaca de la Palma is also the location of where Zachary Taylor and his troops engage in a victorious battle over General Mariano Arista and his men.

The Area of Resaca de la Palma

The Resaca de la Palm State Park is a beautiful area to explore. It is actually made of three different types of landscape. There is 720 acres of savannah and woodland habitations. This area is mostly monopolized by mesquite. There is another section made up of mature woodland habitats that spans 420 acres. In this area, there is an abundance of ebony trees. The third landscape you will discover at Resaca de la Palma is 60 acres of beautiful and lush wetlands.

Things to Do at the Resaca

The state park has plenty to do. If you enjoy walking or biking, then there are several trails throughout the state park. These trails range over eight miles. If you do not have a bike or forgot your bicycle at home, the park store does offer bike rentals that can be used throughout the day until 3 pm. If you do not want to bike or need a reprieve from walking, the park has tram tours that you can take.

Resaca de la Palma is also home to beautiful wildlife. You can discover some of the wildlife on any of the four decks that face the resaca. If you need help looking at the animals in the area, the park store does provide binoculars that you can rent. As you search for wildlife, you will undoubtedly stumble across the array of birds that call the state park home. There are a variety of fowl you can find, such as the Green Jay, Yellow-breasted Chat, Northern Mockingbirds, and many more.
